BUNKHOUSE RENOVATION 6

Here are some photos of the Bunkhouse Project as it is ready to winter over until next year!

The roof is finally shingled and the cabin is watertight once more!

I spent a lot of time getting the roof ready to shingle. Removing two layers of old shingles and pulling every nail was very time consuming. I cut off the extra overhang that was on the pump house roof and remade that roof line. I added wider fascia and replaced several rotted roof boards. I then renailed the entire roof as some boards were not even nailed at every rafter and then went over every old nail to make sure they were set properly.

James came up for the weekend and we covered the entire roof with ice and water shield and installed new drip edge. We found a local roofer that wanted to work for a couple of hours and we cut and passed shingles as he nailed. Four square of shingles in a little over four hours seemed like pretty good time. Cutting in the two different roof pitches at the valley was the challenge but this guy was experienced and new just how to deal with it. We were thrilled that he had time to help and he saved us having to work a second day as we were done in record time.

Today I just cleaned up the work site and got everything ready to winter over. I did add a couple of studs where the new bathroom wall will be and framed out the rough opening for a window that I will need to make for there. The old window was rotten and the opening was way too big anyway so I will see if I can make something suitable over the winter.

I think that’s it for this camp season as it has been in the low 30s every morning. Next spring I will start by cutting out the floor so I can access and relocate the plumbing pipes. The the entire cabin will get another layer of plywood to reinforce the floor. I will then raise and reconfigure the ceiling, rewire the outlets and replace the wallboard in preparation for new paint. This turned into more of a project than we had anticipated but I hope the final project will be worth it!
