Maj. GEORGE G. GRATTAN

Maj. GEORGE G. GRATTAN CSA

February 1839 - Oct. 31, 1915

Harrisonburg, VA

Colquitt's Brigade,- Army of Northern Virginia

"How well we boys remember the gallant Maj. Grattan, Colquitt's special Aid, and who never forgot that he was one of the Gilmer Blues. Where shot and shell flew thickest, there could Grattan always be found. At the second Cold Harbor he received a wound which necessitated the amputation of a leg, which ended his brilliant military carreer. Together with his aunt he moved from Lexington (Georgia) and is now practicing law in (Harrisonburg) Virginia"

(Editor's note-George Rockingham Gilmer (1790 - 1859) was born near Lexington, Georgia, in what is present day Oglethorpe County. Gilmer served two terms as the 34th Governor of Georgia, the first from 1829 to 1831 and the second from 1837 to 1839. Gilmer County, located in the north central portion of Georgia, was created in 1832 and was named for him.

(But....I wonder why they called this company his "Blues" and not his "Grays"?)
