BUNKHOUSE

BUNKHOUSE RENOVATION

Here are some photos of the Bunkhouse.

I always knew the bunkhouse was an addition to the Pump house but if turned out more complicated. Notice the vertical 2” molding on the outside of the building between the front windows and the door. This same molding is on the back of the bunkhouse and both line up with the interior partition and doorway between the sleeping area and the bathroom. It turns out that molding just hides the cut ends of the siding that must be all 14’ lengths.

Photo #3 is the wall between the sleeping area and the bathroom with the trim off. Notice the exterior siding! This was once the outside wall of a 10’ x 10' addition #1. Could it have been just the bathroom and place for a cot originally? The kitchen seemed original but why would they need a kitchen if there was no place to sleep?

The 14’ long sleeping area must have been a later addition (#2). They just cut an opening in the exterior wall and hung a curtain to make a bedroom area. From what I can see, there was once some kind of insulation up there which is now just disintegrated into nothing and full of nuts and mouse stuff. Pretty nasty. I don’t know why the bathroom ceiling was being held up by the walls. It’s almost like all the framing was reused lumber and short pieces and just cobbled together.

One good thing is that I don’t see the old exterior wall going all the way up to the roof so it may not be structural. It looks like they took the old roof off addition #1 when they built #2 and ran new rafters and a complete new roof assembly over both sections.

The photo with the broom shows a large pile of nuts and shells that the mice were storing over the bathroom door. I suspect the ceiling is full with stuff like that! It will be quite a mess to clean up before any new construction can happen.

Just thought you might like to see the progress!
