BUNKHOUSE RENOVATION

Here are some photos of the Bunkhouse project as it continues in Spring 2020.

We had some fairly warm weather the first week of April so we were able to get a start on the renovation project. I removed the doors and all the furniture that was stored there so I could have room to work. I removed some of the old electric wires and outlets and removed the last of the wall panels. In the back corner by the rear door I exposed a lot of damage from carpenter ants. This is the area behind the propane tank that required extensive reconstruction last fall. The ants must have entered via the rotten corner wood and followed the wood up into the cabin. I couldn't easily remove the entire stud as it was the corner stud and the siding was nailed into it from both sides of the corner. I cut the worse damaged wood out in the center of the stud and will replace it with a section of treated wood. I will then rebuild that corner with two more treated 2 x 4s.

Next, I cut several holes in the floor so l could access the sewer pipes. I cut and removed the old piping and layed out what I will need to relocate the toilet and sink pipes. I then removed the last of the ceiling rafters and the horizontal suporting wood on the front wall. Next trip I will cut and install the new section of horizontal ceiling.

Once I have the new plumbing drain pipes roughed in I will be able to repair the access holes that I have made and will install a top layer of plywood over the existing narrow board flooring. Once that section of old cabin floor is up to the same level as the rest of the cabin I will rip off the old fashioned linoleum and cover the entire cabin with a new layer of plywood.

Notice the blue tape on the walls that marks my suggested location for the electric outlets. The front wall will be 20" to the top of the outlet but the ones on the back wall will all be 36" (maybe 32") to the top so they will be accessable from both the top and bottom bunks. The existing outlets were very low and every one was cracked and broken. I will have three recessed lights in the ceiling wlorking off the front wall switch and two ceiling fans as well. It will be a lot more outlets than we used to have but I can still put in more or in a different location if anyone has a suggestion?
