BUNKHOUSE RENOVATION 2 Here are some photos of the progress in the
bunkhouse.
I spent 6 hours yesterday working on the bunkhouse. Pulling down the ceiling was a nightmare! There was an ancient type of insulation in the ceiling called Kimsul. It was a wood fiber product popular in the 1940s into the mid 1950s. Not asbestos but still disintegrated into a nasty mess. When I pulled down the bathroom plywood ceiling there was a blinding cloud of dust and filth that no mask could have protected me from. Once it settled somewhat I went back in and you can see in the photo with the shovel the huge pile of insulation chunks and chewed nuts and mouse stuff! The exterior wood siding on the one bathroom wall went all the way outside to the corner of the original building so you can see the space in the wall after I pulled out the siding. So far, I don’t see any sign of rot or current roof leaks. There is some dryrot where the ceiling had the plywood patch in the far back corner but I think that leak must have predated the roof upgrade that we did 20 years ago. The inside of the roof looks nice and clean. It will take some work but it may be feasible to remove all or most of the joists that held the ceiling tiles and move the ceiling in the front of the building up a few feet. If I do that I will still have to put up a full plywood ceiling so the kids in the top bunk don’t hit their heads on the roof rafters. I have quite a few bags of tiles and crap to take to the transfer station. I am tired today but it will take most of the day to pull all the old nails and clean up all the broken wood so that will keep me busy. DO YOU WANT TO SEE MORE OF THE RENOVATIONS? CLICK HERE!
