BUNKHOUSE RENOVATION 5

Here are some recent photos of the Bunkhouse Project. Getting the roof ready for shingles!

Now I am working on the roof - replacing all the rotten wood and getting ready for new shingles.

The roof rafters over the area where the refrigerator used to be were rotted right off. I had to sister new wood to four rafters as well as repair the support wood in the top of the wall. I think the problem was the extra long overhang on the pump house roof that extended out past the eves of the bunkhouse. They tried to put a wide piece of aluminum flashing in the new valley they created when they attached the first bunkhouse addition but all that did was dump the water on the section of the pump house roof that extended past the flashing. I don’t know why they did it this way but I cut 6”+ off the pump house roof , added an extra rafter that extended out to match the bunkhouse, and built a new drip edge at the eve. Now the eve of the pump house will line up with the eve of the bunkhouse. This should make for a better valley that channels the water away from the back wall.

The next step is to complete the new overhang and replace my temporary roof patch with ¾” plywood. Then I will replace the existing 2” fascia with 6” so I can add a gutter in the future if I determine it is needed. Once that is on I can install the new drip edge all the way around and add a layer of Ice and Water Shield to the entire roof. After that, a row of “starter” shingles and I should be ready to shingle the roof by the end of the week. First on Monday I have to clean up the huge pile of old shingles that I threw onto the ground and take them to the transfer station.

New photos to follow once I get back up there and show some progress.
